The statement below has just been emailed to parents of Swan School applicants for next September…
The question that we have been asked most often over recent months is when we will be confirming the location of the temporary site at which the initial intake of Swan School pupils will be educated for the academic year 2019-2020. We are delighted that we are now in a position to answer it.
While our fantastic new buildings and facilities are being developed at Marston it is planned that the school will be based on the playing fields adjacent to the South Site of The Cherwell School on Marston Ferry Road. Both The Swan School and The Cherwell School are part of the River Learning Trust.
The Department for Education and The River Learning Trust investigated many sites during an extensive search and we believe that the decision that has been reached is the best possible outcome. We are delighted with the location as it is close to the permanent site for The Swan and provides opportunities and space that would not have been possible elsewhere.
It is planned that The Swan School will be based in prefabricated modular buildings on a small section of the playing fields at the South Site, separate from The Cherwell School itself. This will allow us to develop The Swan’s unique identity and also mean that we can foster a friendly ‘small-school ethos’ where all pupils are known individually – a huge benefit in the transition from primary to secondary school. An image that gives an indication of the planned area is shown above.
The area planned for use is currently used after school hours by The Cherwell School and local community for sports clubs, and these will be re-provided for elsewhere on the school field.
The governing body of The Cherwell School considered the proposed arrangement last week and it has unanimously backed it.
It is currently anticipated that this arrangement will be in place for the duration of The Swan’s first year. Due to the planning process for our new school taking longer than we had hoped, and it being a major, complex construction project, it is not out of the question that we may need to be based on the temporary site into the second year.
Of course, all parties involved in the project will be striving hard for the temporary arrangement to be as short as possible, but we also feel it is important to plan for all eventualities to ensure that we are able to continue to provide an outstanding education for our students.
A planning application will now be submitted for the temporary site, and we will keep you updated on its progress and how you can get involved.
More details will be available in due course about the specifications of the temporary accommodation and how this will operate for our founding year group of pupils, including transport and access details, facilities and the confirmed, precise area that the temporary Swan School site will cover. We will also be hosting Q&A events for prospective parents in the New Year, when you can meet the team and find out more.
We hope you will agree that finding a temporary location relatively near the permanent home for The Swan School is a great solution and we look forward to sharing more details with you in the coming weeks.
